Why Do Hairdressers Need Insurance?

Almost every business should consider public liability insurance. Whether you’re a contractor working on third-party properties or a small business owner dealing with customers, it protects against unexpected claims.
Some key sectors that benefit from public liability insurance include:

  • Tradespeople
  • Freelancers
  • Consultants
  • Couriers

Without liability insurance, even minor incidents, like damaging a client’s property, could lead to costly claims and legal fees, putting your business at financial risk. Protect your livelihood and reputation with the right coverage for your needs.

Managing Everyday Risks in the Hair and Beauty Industry
Whether you work from a salon, at clients’ homes, or on the go, accidents can happen in an instant. Spilled products, slips, or a reaction to hair dye can lead to costly claims. Without insurance, hairdressers risk:

  • Injury claims from clients due to slips, trips, or allergic reactions.
  • Damage to a client’s property during a mobile appointment.
  • Theft, damage, or loss of expensive styling tools and equipment.

Keeping Your Business Beautiful and Protected
You work hard to build a loyal client base — don’t let a single mishap undo it all. Hairdressers' insurance helps cover compensation claims, legal fees, and tool replacements, so you can carry on cutting, colouring, and styling with confidence.

What are the Legal Requirements for Hairdressers?

Employers’ Liability – A Legal Must if You Have Staff
If you run a salon or employ assistants, even part-time or as trainees, employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement. It protects you if a team member is injured or falls ill due to their work.

Public Liability – Essential for Client-Facing Work
Public liability isn’t legally required — but it's vital. It covers claims if a client is injured or their property is damaged during a treatment. Many salons and venues also require it before allowing you to work there.

Do Mobile Hairdressers Need Insurance?
Yes – even if you work solo. Accidents during home visits or while transporting your kit can still lead to claims. Public liability and tools insurance are essential for peace of mind when you're on the move.
