Why Do Designers Need Insurance?

Almost every business should consider public liability insurance. Whether you’re a contractor working on third-party properties or a small business owner dealing with customers, it protects against unexpected claims.
Some key sectors that benefit from public liability insurance include:

  • Tradespeople
  • Freelancers
  • Consultants
  • Couriers

Without liability insurance, even minor incidents, like damaging a client’s property, could lead to costly claims and legal fees, putting your business at financial risk. Protect your livelihood and reputation with the right coverage for your needs.

Managing Risks in the Design Industry
Design may be a creative field, but it comes with serious business risks – especially when working with clients, handling files, or meeting deadlines. Without insurance, designers could face:

  • Claims over project errors, missed deadlines, or unsatisfied clients.
  • Copyright or intellectual property disputes.
  • Theft or damage to laptops, tablets, or specialist equipment.

Protecting Your Work, Clients, and Finances
One unhappy client or technical issue can turn into a costly legal battle or lost income. Designers insurance helps cover compensation claims, legal fees, and equipment repair or replacement – keeping your business protected.

Employers’ Liability Insurance – A Legal Requirement
If you employ anyone – even contractors or interns – UK law requires you to have employers’ liability insurance. It protects you if an employee is injured or becomes ill due to their work.

Insurance That Builds Client Confidence
Clients, especially agencies and corporates, often expect designers to have professional indemnity insurance. It shows professionalism and protects you if something goes wrong with your work or advice.

Do Freelance Designers Need Insurance?
It’s not legally required – but professional indemnity and public liability insurance are strongly recommended. They protect you if a client claims your work caused them financial loss or if you accidentally damage property during a meeting or event.
